Food For Thought: On Shame

Today I was working with a private client and when I asked him if he had done any practice he said, “no, I’ve been bad.”
And so I said, “there isn’t a judgement value, it’s only a question about information.”
“Oh I know, I’m just trying to motivate myself that way.”
I laughed and said, “ok, is shame an effective motivator for you?”
He laughed too.”hmmm.”
I hear a lot of goals and motivations and resolutions this time of year, and shame is present in so many. I personally don’t think shame is nearly as good of a motivator as presence and the pleasure of presence. Perhaps taking pleasure in noticing what is present can motivate the things that keep us in the zone of making choices that support that state of waking.
Food for thought.
